Hidden out behind a grilled cheese counter, the space at the Mabel combines minimalist details (a cinderblock bar, exposed light bulbs), a lounge ambiance (leather couches, peach walls) and a modernist touch (Scandinavian barstools), for mixed results. As for the cocktails, on the other hand, Joseph Akhavan (ex-Mama Shelter), a nut about rare rums (100 labels), gets straight to the point. A special mention for the tightrope-walking Trader Who (€13), a mix of rums (New Grove Plantation, Rhum PMG, Plantation Barbados Grande Réserve) with Dry Curaçao, a homemade orgeat-coconut-pine nut syrup, lime and Black Ceylan bitters, topped with a cherry and coconut! For the less adventurous, there are fresh fruit juice virgin cocktails upon request (€7). // A.B.
