A good cup of joe at a coffee shop is the bare minimum. But when the atmosphere is also great… total respect! So we’re shining a spotlight on these temples to the petit noir that also serve fantastic eats and have managed to outshine all the competition…

The best of them all! – Paris
We love absolutely everything on Mokonuts’ delectable menu: labneh, turnips and pita; roasted pumpkin with a creamy sesame sauce; dangerously delicious cookies…. All made by a Lebanese-Japanese couple who are on a mission to electrify your taste buds. As for the drinks, you’ll find more than just java — they also serve excellent natural wines by the glass (€6 to €6.50). At lunch: plates €4-14, cookies €2. Open at night, upon reservation only: €40 for a 6-7-course meal.

The most kawa maki – Rennes
Vegetarian but not light, the menu at Petite Nature takes inspiration from all over the world: a fantastic bo bun with smoked tofu, comforting chickpea soup, delicious futomakis with roasted sweet potato. And to make up for the lack of sugar in your coffee? Divine banana bread or walnut brownies…. From €1.80 to €4.20 a coffee, formulas from €7.50 to €11.50.

The most authentic – Lyon
Even if Kitchen Café sounds American, the chef is most definitely Swedish and the menu is extremely Lyonnais with Mokxa coffees, teas from the Eclos boutique and small, lovingly prepared market dishes: tender pork shoulder and black cardamom-spiced polenta; poached rhubarb with a very energetic lemon cream. Formula €25-29 (lunch), €1.50 to €2.50 for the cakes, €1.60 to €4.50 for hot drinks.

The coolest – Paris
In addition to the powerful blends roasted by the Brûlerie de Belleville, Ten Belles specializes in extremely fresh eats: an utterly gourmet morning breakfast bun (mushrooms, parsley and Comté); sandwiches with cheddar, chili jam and lamb’s lettuce; incredible peanut butter brownies (only on the weekends). Savory snacks from €1.50 to €8.50, sweets from €1.50 to €5.
