A hundred meters as the crow flies from the Old Port neighborhood of Marseille, Opéra Zoizo has built its nest in a cute little bistro (verdigris walls, paneled bars, globe-shaped light fixtures), where the young chef Maëlyss Vultaggio (ex-Parpaing qui flotte) crafts dishes that make hungry customers coo with pleasure. Featured on the impeccable menu the day we went for lunch, seated on the terrace across from the (real) opera house: a memorable zucchini and emmental terrine; plump bhaji-style onion beignets, served with a cilantro dipping sauce; insanely good Vietnamese-inspired pork meatballs, with smashed potatoes and an incredible mayonnaise; silky tuna gravlax with a chickpea and dill cream; and an heirloom tomato gazpacho with croutons, berries (strawberries, raspberries and blackberries to be precise) and brousse cheese. All those with a sweet tooth will be pleased to learn of the addictive French toast topped with plum-nectarine confit and frozen yogurt, or a heartening peanut lava cake with lemon curd. Opéra Zoizo also has a small stage, so you can satisfy your hunger for delicious food and theater at the same time! // Juliette Mallat
