If you want to break bread on the path that runs along Canal des Deux-Mers, head to L’Oguste, a former lockhouse that’s been converted into a family bistro (hardwood floors, blue-grey walls, blonde wooden tables) by self-taught chefs Agnès and Richard Fuster. The day we went for lunch, the former insurance broker unveiled a lovely €17 prix-fixe menu: hearty cochon noir pork trotters from Cambes, caramelized in soy sauce and spices (cinnamon, ginger, lemongrass); good veal brisket from the Périgord region, over a bed of pesto tagliatelle; before an excellent Mirabelle plum clafoutis prepared by Agnès. On Friday and Saturday nights, the couple kicks things up a notch: slow-cooked salt cod with tapenade, eggplant hummus and a sobrassada tartine; spit-roasted veal shoulder with haricots verts, tomatoes and a spicy sauce… // P.L.
