La Taverne de Zhao
Take a look at this pretty little spot with its bright red façade, pink marble tables and bar, light green walls and an open kitchen! And what’s more, this tiny Parisian temple to the cuisine of Xi’an (the capital of Shaanxi province in central China) serves incredible dishes too! Available à la carte: an impeccable black mushroom, shallot, pink radish and cilantro salad in a rice vinegar dressing; cheeky fried chicken that was marinated in fermented tofu and served with pink radishes and Zhao’s mayonnaise sauce; delicious momo (grilled buns stuffed with your choice of stewed pork, lacquered duck, tofu or chicken); generous spinach noodles topped with stewed pork, Chinese cabbage, chives and cilantro; or even a comforting broth with shredded chicken, Chinese mushrooms, five-spice tofu, seaweed and vegetables, all mixed with sweet potato noodles or rice flour vermicelli. For dessert, there’s fresh mango slices over a bed of black rice cooked in coconut milk, ice creams (matcha, black sesame) or green tea flan. // O.J. & S.S.
