Le P'tit Rouquin

Restaurant Le P'tit Rouquin in NiortLe P'tit Rouquin (Niort) - © Adrien Simon

Even if this redhead has been getting some grey hairs over the years, the devilish Alexandre Lime (a sommelier by training) hasn’t lost his cheeky sense of humor. His P’tit Rouquin? It’s our kind of bistro (red and white checkboard tiled floors, terroir posters on the walls, a ham slicer), where Brice Barin has been cooking up generous and uncomplicated market cuisine for the last eight years. The proof could be found on the €27 menu the day we went for lunch: a generous slice of bone marrow, scooped up with good country bread; tender Parthenaise steak tartare sprinkled with Parmesan; and an almond cookie crisp with yuzu cream and mojito jelly. As for the wines, there are some sure bets: Trinq’âmes, a Touraine blanc from La Grange Tiphaine (€4.50 a glass), Petit Ours, a Côtes-du-Rhône red from Matthieu Barret (€29 a bottle) or a Marsannay white from Sylvain Pataille (€42). Set menus €16.50 (lunch), €27, à la carte €30-50. // A.Be.
