Les Pères Populaires
Le Fooding Guide’s 2014 Special Honor
For multiple seasons now, young chefs have been succeeding one another at Les Pères Populaires, a big dive with plenty of spirit, managed by the talented Bars Pop’ group – which was given a Fooding d’honneur award in 2014. The stated goal of this spot: make the everyday extraordinary and at low prices! Which is exactly what Flore Granboulan (who has been working here since 2016) brilliantly aims to do by offering high flying weekday lunch menus. The last time we went, for a mere 16 bucks (€13 without dessert): a good red lentil soup with spices, coconut and mustard seeds; an excellent plat de résistance composed of seaweed sausage from Chavassieux, spelt wheat salad with beets, kohlrabi, thinly sliced red onion, quartered oranges and a Kalamata olive spread; before a delightful chocolate cake filled with whole hazelnuts, accompanied by an orange blossom cream, plus pieces of melon and peach on the side for dessert. At night, we come back for platters (€8-11) or a croque monsieur (€8) to go with a glass of Vin Pop (€2.40) or a half-pint of Jupiler (€2.90), sipped while seated on a school chair or on an old couch. Set menu option €10-17 (lunch). // J.G.
