Street Bangkok Canteen & Bar
While they’re already running things over on the Canal Saint-Martin, for their second location, Street Bangkok decided to send out its finger-licking good flavor bombs on rue de la Roquette. In this kitsch & industrial setting (sheet metal walls, stainless steel tables, pink neon lights), cardboard cartons get filled with little gems from chefs Ja Euarchukiati (ex-Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok) and Taku Sekine (Dersou), like an electric homemade curry with a five-spice broth… The day we went for lunch, the Chatuchak set menu (€15) sent shivers down our spine: chilled beef with crispy and well-seasoned rice (chilies, green onions, mint), followed by some very tender chicken breast marinated in satay sauce. The menu (weekday lunch) comes with a free and delicious homemade ginger-cilantro lemonade – or, for those who are bored stiff by soft drinks, there are Asian cocktails for €8: Thai basil infused vodka, or a Cognac/spicy citronnade mixture. Set menus €10-15, desserts €5-6. // J.S.
