White metro tiling, jars of pickles, industrial suspension lamps, cafeteria tables, a menu written out on the big blackboard…. Contrary to appearances, The Sunken Chip isn’t just stylish, it’s also a spot that shakes up regulars! From their fish & chips selection: hake (€8.50), pollack (€8), smoked haddock (€10) or the catch of the day, rolled up in different crispy capes (homemade beer batter; Japanese breadcrumbs; polenta and cayenne; cornflakes and parsley) before being popped into the fryer and served generously with a veggie salad, pickles marinated in British malt vinegar, limp fries and a homemade sauce – tartar, aioli, mayo or tempura. For a drink, there’s French Gallia beer (€5) and English Newcastle brown ale (€5). And to sweeten the palette: a very British lemon curd (€4), Eton mess (whipped cream, broken meringue, coulis and berries, €4). Sides €1-4. Sauces €0.50. Set menus €12-19. // D.C.
