When Brits contemplate the waves, they often see an ocean of fries where more-or-less greasy, crispy fried fish swim around. Not James Whelan (ex-Roseval), who does away with prejudice at his tiny shop with wooden benches and long tables, right near the Canal Saint Martin. His fish & chips are made with a light breading and line-caught fish (black pollack, hake, squid and smoked haddock) and crispy fries, served with bewitching sides: homemade lemony mayo and refreshing minty peas. And they’ve got something special for little sailors: delicious monkfish nuggets. To drink, there’s English Newcastle Brown Ale or French Gallia beer. And for dessert? A divine lemon curd.
