A blood red façade, a fish tank, a very kitsch partition… At Alex Long’s place, you don’t come to get the most likes on Instagram, but to enjoy the Laotian flavor bombs made by his eighty-something mom, Rose. The day we went for lunch: a nice green papaya salad, fresh haricots verts, cherry tomatoes and whole peanuts in a very spicy sauce (€12); explosively flavorful beef with raw carrots, red peppers, radish and mint leaves in nuoc-mâm sauce (€12); award-winning spring rolls with lacquered pork with an incredible hoisin dipping sauce (€9); shellfish cooked in coconut milk and served in a whole coconut (€18); before a more banal banana tapioca dessert with passion fruit ice cream and fresh fruit (€8). To wash it down: an organic white wine from the Domaine du Paternel, vinified right nearby (€30 a bottle), or a Singha beer (€5 for 330 ml). The ultimate tip: you can BYOW with a bottle from the excellent wine shop Les Buvards across the street, and pay just a small corkage fee that you negotiate with the boss! À la carte €18-41. // G.LeP.
