Yuyu Bento

The pitch? A tiny shop with a wooden bar and five seats, where Nagoya natives Yukari and Sakaya simmer two big pots whose contents will take you on a trip to Japan and back. In their famous bento boxes that are made to order using extremely fresh ingredients (€11), you’ll find something for every diet: meat eaters, pescatarians and vegans all welcome! The day we went, our pretty wooden box contained miso-marinted mackerel; carrot kinpira sautéed in soy sauce; a sweet, fluffy omelet; blanched lotus and burdock root; along with some classic mizuna salad, plus perfectly prepared tasty furikake-topped rice. Otherwise, for bento-skeptics, there’s a really delicious katsudon with small pieces of breaded pork (€10), or gyudon, a rice bowl flavored with broth, caramelized onions and delicious strips of beef (€10). And don’t forget about the dessert of the day: for us, it was strawberry mochi (€3). To drink, there’s Japanese beer (€3.50) or hibiscus tea (€3). // L.S.
