Despite being almost 200 years old, this Dandoy is still fresh as a daisy, named after the artisan baker and great-great-grandfather of Alexandre and Antoine Helson, the seventh generation to run this Maison with its golden logo, which has won over fans all across Belgium with 13 locations to its name. Like the one in the heart of the magnificent Galeries Royales, in a former shop designed by Erwin De Muer – brass light fixtures, checkerboard tile floors, woodwork, bucolic tapestries and a green terrazzo bar. Behind which you’ll find entirely natural gluten-filled treats: “spectaculoos” speculoos, along with Greek bread (a Brussels specialty), madeleines and other traditional sweets. Maison Dandoy also doubles as a tearoom: savor the best waffles in all of Brussels there (though the ones topped with strawberries in the winter aren’t ideal), surrounded by a handful of tourists. // Ambre Oisy
The hidden gem: The dark chocolate speculoos cookie, covered in a thick layer of Laurent Gerbaud chocolate with a slight bitterness to it (€11.50 for 140 grams).
