“Should we grab a can of beer?” no longer brings to mind the taste of warm pilsner ever since Stefan Cauwenbergs (the man behind Billie’s Beer Kafétaria) set up a beer shop on the corner of Den Aalmoezenier, a major hotspot for guindailles (students’ end of exam parties) in Antwerp. There, you’ll find nearly 400 labels waiting to be explored, chosen from the night shop fridge or the old-fashioned shelves: Cantillon, Tilquin and 3 Fonteinen lambics and gueuzes, West Coast pale ale from the Anglo-American producers Track x Kavu, Imperial Stout aged in pedro xíménez barrels by Nomada… And a few outsiders like hard cider and mead. A well-kept secret from passersby: during the warm weather months, you can pop open your finds at the back of the shop, in the bucolic garden lit up by string lights. // Janjan Bon
