De Mama

There’s no sign of mamma at this Sint-Andries deli – instead, it’s Mother Earth herself that shopkeeper Bram Uyttenhoven (ex-Mesa, Komilfoo and Hippodroom) invites you to enjoy. Expect beautiful Belgian bites to eat, nothing more! In the épicerie section, you’ll find: Think Tomato sauces made with locally-grown cherry tomatoes, spicy flavor bombs from the Brussels-based hot sauce company Swet, iconic 3 Fonteinen beers… And, behind the bar, everything you need to break bread at lunchtime: bombastic pastrami sandwiches, joyful croquettes, plump polpette, rich risottos and seductive veloutés. Strong-willed are those who resist the call of delicious, sea-faring sandwiches filled with shrimp from the North Sea… Be kind to Mama, and she will reward you with her bounty! // Sugar Kowalczyk

The hidden gem: The carbonnade sold to go, with celery salad and croquettes (€16.95) so you can pass your Belgian diploma with flying colors.
