Don’t go looking for the baker’s wife – she’s busy at the bread oven! Mama, aka Céline, tends the natural levain starter, kneads the dough and keeps a watchful eye on the bakes: loaves, tarts, gressini, brioches and proper traditional baguettes. Meanwhile, Papa baker Bastien holds down the counter, greeting regulars and taking orders with a smile. A decade ago, the Epeiriers walked away from careers in finance to open this 100% organic bakery in the heart of the city. Since then, Mama Baker has truly come into her own, turning out a wide range of beautiful, nourishing, easy-to-digest breads with a springy crumb and a crust that crackles just the way it should. Expect to find spelt and flax seed loaves, turmeric and sunflower seed bread, plus multigrain, rye, buckwheat and kamut. For an afternoon pick-me-up, grab a candied orange peel bun or a coconut macaroon. More savory-minded? Generous tarts come packed with locally grown red cabbage or eggplant. And because Céline and Bastien Olivier are incurable sourcing obsessives, the shelves are lined with well-curated extras from near and afar: fruit juices from Margerie organic farm in the Drôme, chestnut spread from Annot, honey from Isola, jams from Corrèze and even Italian tahini. Last but not least, you can linger over a coffee on the tiny terrace out front. · Alban Mont
THE HIDDEN GEM: The rice flour bread – blended with buckwheat, chickpea and chestnut flours – is worth its weight in gold (€12 per kg).
