Despite what old-fashioned nicknames like Fanfan and Loulou might suggest, if you’re hoping to grab a bottle for lunch at your granddad’s house, we think it best to warn you: this wine shop near the harbor hides the most psychedelic selection on the French Riviera! It’s the work of two Parisians with a taste for Nice’s sunshine, Fanny Vedreine and Louis Girodet, who transformed a former gay bar backroom into a wine lover’s paradise with vintage wallpaper, disco balls, Knoll chairs and a well-loved sofa. It’s a lovely seventies-style mess where you can shop their extremely sharp selection of natural wine from uncompromising winemakers: Mukafa, a Luberon cinsault produced by Jérémy Raza (€30), Pulpe Fiction, an Ardèche syrah from Alexandre Michel (€18), Putes Féministes, a gewürztraminer (€36) and a Vins & Volailles collab with Julien Albertus (€36)… And if you want to quench your thirst in house (for a €5 corkage fee in addition to the bottle price), there are cured meats from Fanny’s native Cantal department or tapas stewed up by Loulou to snack on (rösti with anchovy cream, pita with boeuf bourguignon…). What’s more, they’ve got the perfect Sunday lunch option: you can order a roast chicken plate from the Rôtisserie Auguste with potatoes and jus or grilled corn. // Thomas Jossin
THE BULLET-PROOF BOTTLE: Brut de Cuve, a highly drinkable Gamay with notes of strawberry, from Romain des Grottes(€18).
