Tomette tile floors, simple furniture, industrial suspension lamps… Welcome to Chez Pipo, the Socialist Party’s unofficial headquarters for nearly a century now! Here they advocate socca (a chickpea flour pancake), prepared the old-fashioned way by Steve Bernardo and his team. Cooked over a wood fire on a copper hotplate, they are crispy, tender and peppery all at the time same, and can be gobbled up in house or taken to go along the beach path. For even more cheeky fun, top this Nice specialty with chopped scallions, marinated peppers, anchovy fillets, slow-roasted tomatoes and eggplant… // A.A.

FEELING THIRSTY? Socca chickpea lager (€4.90 for 330 ml) or an everyday Côtes-de-Provence available in red, white or rosé (€3.20 a glass, €16 a bottle).
