ROCINANTE

With her Rocinante, Renée Del Porto passes for the Don Quichotte of natural wines! After life as a medievalist and then a Spanish teacher, she decided to open up a sustainable wine shop just a stone’s throw from the Roman church in Poitiers, in a bric-a-brac shop that adopts bottles of all kinds (Michel Tolmer posters, vintage furniture…). On the shelves, you’ll find a short but enticing selection of wines at reasonable prices that heavily feature bottles made by friends, including Fruissance, a Bergerac red from the Château Les Hauts de Caillevel meant to be drunk young (€11), Chat Fou, a Côtes-du-Rhône red from Éric Texier (€16) or Spring, a vouvray by Vincent Carême (€15)… Uncork them all in house if you’re feeling thirsty (for an additional €9 corkage fee), with some excellent porc noir grillons or a selection of cheeses, to sponge everything up. // Jean Pascal

The bullet-proof bottle: Le Vin de Thierry, a Vendée white from the Domains Saint-Nicolas, a chenin and grolleau gris blend with briny minerality due to the proximity of the ocean (€16 for a to go bottle, €6 for a glass).
