Is finding a good sandwich in the city of Arles just a pipe dream? Not anymore! They’re just well-hidden in its maze of ancient streets, tucked away behind the very small door of La Cachette. There, you’ll also find Marjorie Martinez, who used to work as a private chef with Maison Mère, and who now welcomes in customers from behind the vintage bar before redirecting them to the series of Scandi-Provençal-inspired lounges or the tiny, bohemian courtyard. Once comfortably seated, get ready for sandwiches made on challah, that Shabbat bread, loaded up with good things: Alpilles lamb shoulder, turmeric-spiced hummus, scallions, red cabbage slaw and roasted veggies in ours, chosen over the version stuffed with gardiane de taureau (the Camargue region’s famous bull stew), or with cod, preserved lemon yogurt, zucchini and fresh herbs, or artichokes, feta, roasted tomatoes and pine nuts. A light Lebanese flan with lots of pistachios is the perfect way to end the meal. // Megan Linard

FEELING THIRSTY? : Good homemade lemonade (€3), Marseille-made beers (smoked lager from La Crapule at €4.50 for 330 ml) and even a short selection of terroir-heavy wines (Je Ne Souffre Plus, a Côtes-du-Rhône from the Domaine La Florane at €25 a bottle, or Les Sorcières, a Roussillon white from Le Clos des Fées at €37).
PRICE: : Set menus €11-19 (€11-16 to go), desserts €5.50, kids’ menu €10.
