Le Marronnier

When talking to someone from Strasbourg about Le Marronnier, it’s always the same old tune: “They make the best flammekueches in the city,” “It’s my second home,” etc. We had to see for ourselves, and sure enough, the former Stutzheim inn with oh-so Alsatian decor (a half-timbered house with wattle and daub walls, a massive covered terrace, a series of wood-paneled dining rooms, kelsh tablecloths, and a majestic ceramic wood-fired oven) lives up to its reputation. The famous tarte flambée? It’s freshly made, crispy, thin, and served in several different iterations. We tried the traditional one (lardons, crème fraîche, onions) and the button mushroom version. Both outstanding! As for the desserts, there’s apple strudel that could have been a little flakier, or a very ‘80s banana split. Also available à la carte: homemade duck foie gras, Alsatian-style snails, pot-au-feu salad, pork shank braised in brown ale, choucroute… // Marcelle Claudepierre

FEELING THIRSTY? A festival of clean Alsatian wines: Côte de Rouffach, a Pinot gris from René Muré (€6.20 a glass), a Sylvaner from Albert Seltz in Mittelbergheim (€22 a bottle), a Riesling Grand Cru Wiebelsberg from Pierre Koch in Nothalten (€42)…
PRICE: Flammekueche €6 to €11.70 depending on the size, à la carte €25-45.
