Happy as a harvest! Or “métive” (Old French for harvest), proudly stamped across the white and seafoam-green facade of this Charentais bakehouse that’s part bakery, part restaurant… Ring a bell? That’s because Pauline Celle and Julien Borie, formerly of Baston in Bordeaux (Fooding Guide 2022 award winners), have brought their winning formula to the Île d’Oléron. On one side, a counter stacked with just-baked breads; on the other, a lineup of small plates showcasing meticulously sourced local produce. Mix and match to your appetite or share the lot in a space of exposed stone walls and light wood furniture. Good thing there’s plenty of bread on hand to mop your plate clean! · Marie Saline
Ate: Beetroot mille-feuille with scallop garum; breaded celeriac cordon bleu-style, stuffed with mushrooms and Comté; red mullet with a spicy head jus; and Pauline’s brioche, turned into French toast by Julien and served with peanut praline.
Price: Set menus €33-44-55 (3-4-5 courses).
