THE STORY: Restaurant-owners in Nantes, Sandrine and Xavier were looking for a good reason to come back to the Hautes Alpes department. Located on a mountain slope within the old village of Les Orres, this former hiker’s cottage seemed like the obvious choice. They’ve reconverted it into a warm and cozy B&B with five impeccably decorated bedrooms (Farrow & Ball tones, linen sheets and cushions, Scandinavian furniture, dried flowers and either a terrace or a balcony for each room), and their chalet is now a big kid’s dream spot. And don’t miss their table d’hôte restaurant, open 3 or 5 nights a week depending on the season. Double rooms starting at €120 a night.

TOILETRIES: Casanera “Made in Maquis” pine soap and orange and myrtle shower gel.
INTERNET: Wifi (free)
BREAKFAST: Included – with organic coffee or tea, organic apple juice, organic homemade yogurt, homemade bread, baguette, organic homemade jams, local cheeses from Durance, fresh fruits or fruit compote depending on the season, and two homemade cakes (French toast, carrot cake, caramelized apple cake).
MINI-BAR: No, but you can just knock on the kitchen door and help yourself to some organic lemonade, organic apple juice, organic beer (Sauvage, from the Ubaye Valley), or even a glass or a bottle of organic wine.
LITTLE LUXURY: Taking a bath in the Slalom or Alpage rooms while enjoying the sunset over the Orres mountains.
