Open a retro Florida-style bar and restaurant with an end-of-the-world atmosphere? That’s exactly what Jonathan Thys did back in February 2020, with help from Erica Jacobs of Triple D interior design studio. The result? A voluminous, 1930s-inspired dining room, sitting somewhere between an American country club and a Roaring Twenties cabaret (Cesca upholstered chairs, art deco globe lighting, bespoke neon lights and potted palm trees), overlooking a channel of the main canal, with all its industrial charm. And to keep the exoticism alive, the menu goes full Mediterranean, reaching as far as the Levant. That day at lunch, we opted for: glistening grilled Padrón pimientos, seasoned with salt and olive oil; and a puffy homemade pita bread housing a plump and juicy lamb patty, with white cabbage, red onion rings and, unfortunately, out-of-season tomato. With all that, a flawless flat white from roasters MOK, to bring us back to reality. // Laszlo Dela
