On the bustling shopping street Diestsestraat, caffeinated aromas coming from MOK draw in people on a shopping spree and coffee addicts alike, who crowd around the bar in front of the windowed facade or grab a seat at a Formica table in the back. We ought to mention that Jens Crabbé doesn’t mess around when it comes to his scrupulously sourced specialty coffee that gets roasted in his Brussels atelier (Brazilian Espresso B, Ecuadorian El Alisal, etc.), before being served here in various forms. For something sweet or savory to munch on, there are quality options as well: spicy avocado toast on sourdough bread from Korst bakery, much like the cookies, cakes and other sweet treats. There’s plenty to get your fingers sticky with, while soaking up the sunny terrace with a deliciously tangy espresso, before leaving with a bag of quality beans – or even some professional equipment if you feel like playing barista at home. // Aline Flamme
The hidden gem: The floral and fruity Ethiopian Tessema Edima (€6 for a cup of pour-over).
