You can take the girls out of Brittany, but you can’t take Brittany out of the girls! For a real taste of Bretagne, head across town to Schaerbeek, where you’ll find Rébecca Saillard (ex-Pierre Sang in Paris) and Mélodie Carré (ex-Armelle Crêperie in Pont-Aven), who left Rennes to flip galettes galore inside what used to be Chabrol, near the Saint-Servais church. Set in a beautifully preserved Art Nouveau space, with curved lines and period woodwork, the pair now turn out kraz (crispy) buckwheat galettes and fluffy sweet crêpes, freshly made on the Krampouz and loaded with carefully sourced ingredients. A few local heroes from the 1030 zip code even made the cut, like Winok coffee, Jalou ice cream and Brasserie de la Mule beers. After an obligatory galette complète (farmhouse jambon d’Ardenne, egg and Emmental) cooked to perfection, move on to the grilled sausage special (housemade artisan sausage from Maison Gaillard) drizzled in a creamy honey mustard sauce. And for dessert, a faultless beurre-sucre with melted Bordier butter and sugar, or a crêpe topped with chocolate sauce, Jalou buckwheat ice cream and kasha toasted buckwheat. // Gwen Dalle
FEELING THIRSTY? Obviously, it wouldn’t be the true Breton experience without a bit of hard cider, like the cider on tap from Nicolas Martin in Plouay (€4 for a bolée cup), bottles from Des Bouteilles à l’Amère in Finistère (extra-brut Free Rider or Schistre at €30 and €34 each) and canned Belgian hard cider from Atelier Constant-Berger (€8.40 for 330 ml). Other options include a few organic and Belgian craft sodas, like Chouette mate (€5.80 for 330 ml). And tap water is free! Yec’hed mat !
PRICE: Galettes €4 to €16.50, crêpes €4 to €10.80.
