This is the love story of Paul Melville and Zsu Meszaros, who not only fell head over heels for one another, but for New Zealand-style pies too! And so, after years vagabonding from kitchen to kitchen (including a stint at Peter Gordon’s The Providores in London, no less), in 2019 they decided to bring said pies to Belgium’s shores. The passionate duo first kicked things off with a food truck hustle in a local auto shop, before landing their dream location: an old chocolate factory, with so much oven space to pump out pies to their heart’s content. Here, in this cozy spot, complete with old school chairs, hardwood tables and custom light fixtures made from wine bottles, is where the magic happens. Their buttery shortcrust pastry (made with Weerribben butter) is stuffed with fresh vegetables sourced directly from local farms, like Herdershof, Ferme de Tabreux and De Volle Grond. The day we went, after flipping a coin, we went for the Moroccan-inspired pie filled with pulled lamb shoulder, ras el hanout, carrots and chickpeas, all enclosed in a wickedly crispy puff pastry. Complete the experience with a tiny pot of sweet and sour chili salsa, made with the freshest ingredients, to takeaway and enjoy at home. You won’t regret it! · Coco Bianca
