No need to cartwheel or act the barnyard rooster at Bar Leon… Here, life goes by without much fuss, either at the white marble bar or on the terrace. The school-style coat racks and self-service speculoos cookie jar speak volumes: everyone is invited to join in the fun, big and little kids alike. Picture the scene the day we went: we spotted old-timers sharing a Westmalle (€3.20 to €4.20 for 330 ml) as their grandkids enjoyed a hot chocolate, bums plonked firmly on the wooden banquette seating. Also on the menu: homemade lemonades, like the very fruity Casablanca (blackcurrant, lemon and fresh mint, €3.70), and easy-going aperitfis like vermouth (€5), Aperol Spritz (€6) or even the Hugo (cava, elderflower and fresh mint, €7). You can even make a night of it, hanging out with friends while drinking beers on tap, like the Triple d’Anvers (€4.20 for 330 ml). Hungry? Snack on bags of chips, toasted nuts, olives or tortillas and salsa – simple, generous, and hard to beat. // Suzette Follet
