A coffee shop very much of its time, with brutalist architecture, concrete walls, terrazzo floors and panoramic windows framing the domed La Grave chapel. At Copola Coffee, the latest venture from Karim Boukercha and Carlos Rodriguez, the aroma of freshly roasted beans hits you at the door, drifting straight from their in-house Hayuco roastery. Here, Colombian and Ethiopian coffees are brewed with precision, for a spot-on espresso, hand brews or an iced Americano (€2-5). And the food holds its own too. Chef Julien Lemboulas’s (ex-Canopée House) small but mighty menu sure delivered the day we went for lunch: a veggie toastie in a golden potato bun, loaded with baby spinach, a fried egg, melted cheese and a drizzle of fermented honey; sunny caponata crowned with an œuf parfait, Taggiasca olives and garlic bread; followed by a dazzling dessert of peach poached in hibiscus, topped with cocoa crumble and turmeric whipped cream (€5-15). Don’t skip the sweet treats on the counter either (pistachio babka, moist apricot cake, rustic scones), perfect with a coffee, a house soda or cascara – the fruity infusion made from coffee cherries (€4-5). · Marie Delcampo
THE HIDDEN GEM: The cinnamon roll, gloriously finished with a cloud of whipped cream (€4.50).
