Out of the Blue? A cult Dennis Hopper film released in 1980 – and the perfect name for this deliciously Lynchian lair dreamed up by Chloé Bourgès, a documentary and experimental filmmaker (who studied at the Beaux-Arts de Cergy and the Villa Arson in Nice), co-creator of the Feÿ Arts festival, and now owner of this shadowy spot that feeds the mouth, eyes and ears in equal measure. At street level, a bar with a mirrored ceiling and movable furniture pulls you in with natural wine temptations (a gamay from Domaine de Prapin, a sauvignon gris and blanc from Corine Mauro in southwest France, or a Roussillon syrah from Clot de l’Origine, all €6 a glass) and eminently grazeable bites – cheeses from Source (€8 for a board with Kalamata olives), plus tapas of the day (tortilla, guacamole… same price). Downstairs, things get properly cinematic. A fifteen-seat micro-cinema awaits: sink into a Pierre Paulin sofa and catch free avant-garde screenings, from a video installation by Italian singer Andrea Laszlo De Simone for his album Una Lunghissima Ombra, to animated films during the Sunday afternoon kids’ club, or shorts by renowned filmmakers like Virgil Vernier, Bertrand Mandico and Jane Campion. And when the credits roll, drift back up for a final drink and a thorough debrief! · Tami Taylor
