Bingo! Laurie Deboelpaep and Kevin Daver have pulled out all the stops with Slot, named after the old seigniorial castle in Woluwe which they renovated in its entirety, transforming it into an organic-locavore market, café and workshop with yoga classes on Tuesday evenings. What’s their goal? To promote a more sustainable and local agricultural system by selling produce sourced locally from small-scale producers and at a fair price. From the overflowing shelves, we grabbed the pick of the crop: Mike & Becky Belgian chocolates, Nok nuts, flours and crackers from Graines de Curieux, addictive spreads from Eugène, black bee honey from Beehave or Must sauces from the chef at Le 203. There are also some beautiful products from The Boot, including Mancini pasta, Guerzoni balsamic vinegars and even Tuscan pestos from Antico Colle Fiorito, not to mention the French fancies, like the range of canned goods from The Breton Company. In the fresh produce section, the organic fruits and vegetables mainly come from the Ferme du Peuplier (where Kevin also works), plus meats from Coprosain, cheeses sourced from the Altitude 150 and Gros Chêne farms, and artisanal bread from Levain. And if you’re still hungry, stop by the café for a coffee and lunch made fresh from the market produce. // Alba Nebbioli
THE HIDDEN GEM: The XXL Broyé du Poitou from artisanal biscuit makers Goulibeur (€13.50). Made to share, this buttery shortbread cookie is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside – simply crack into pieces and away you go!
