France’s very first “naked” grocery store – meaning zero single-use packaging – opened in Bordeaux back in 2014. Inside this treasure trove of pantry staples sourced directly from producers, there’s just one golden rule: bring your own containers! And trust us, it’s worth it! Think Pinova apples and Elliot pears from Lot-et-Garonne, kidney beans from Charentes, lingot beans from the Pyrenees, black beans from Gers, chestnut honey from Dordogne and – one well-justified exception to the local sourcing rule – citrus fruits from Corsica, including zingy limes when we popped by. There’s also a handsome organic dairy section, with raw cream, yogurts and fromage blanc from Les Jarouilles farm in Gironde, plus faisselle cheese, yogurt and goat’s milk from Le Chaudron Magique farm in the Lot-et-Garonne. And among the many herbal infusions on offer, a recent curiosity caught our eye: an anti-hangover green tea with lemon peel and calendula petals – should come in handy! · Marcellin Caillou
