Mangia dai sardi e vivi cent’anni (‘eat Sardinian food and live to be a hundred”) – it’s a tempting promise indeed! And the Caboni family (Alberto, Lucia and their daughter Cinzia) fully intend to keep to their word, as they work busily behind the display counter of this shop brimming with edible treasures straight from the Italian island. Wines, preserves, cheeses, charcuterie, pasta – you name it, it’s all primed to go straight into your tote. On our last visit, we snagged: an intense nero di Sicilia sheep’s milk cheese, a dry goat’s ricotta, a jar of Campus eggplant caviar that goes with absolutely everything and pesto made fresh from scratch that very morning – the same one that ends up on plates at Antas, two streets down. And for those days when cooking feels like a chore, they’ve got pizzas and parmigiana ready to take away and reheat a casa! · Aline Flamme
THE HIDDEN GEM: The fiore sardo, a raw sheep’s milk cheese from Sardinia, which is smoked during its curing process (€32 per kilo).
