La Cave des Jacobins is part of the resistance! After spending three decades sharing her wine expertise, Marie-Hélène Merrien finally passed on the family jewel in 2015, which had been handed down from generation to generation since 1896! A decade later, Armel Moisan, sporting a newsboy cap and eyes twinkling behind his glasses, continues dolling out good advice to both regulars and tourists out for a stroll. On the shelves, you’ll find 2,000 labels (many of which are made by natural winemakers!), offering up something for everybody, ranging from the classics (R.Q.W.R, a riesling from the Domaine Trapet at €21.50, Gula Ana 2020, a muscadet from Luneau-Papin at €33) to lesser-known gems – like Palabres, a lovely pineau d’Aunis by Emmanuel Haget (€16), Avant la Tempête, a striking jacquère from Camille and Mathieu Apffel (€20), or Arbyolâ, a rare persan by Denis and Didier Bethollier (€29.90). Still thirsty? Wait until you see the roughly 350 whiskies and 40 rums in his collection, as well as the craft beers, starting with the Da Bep Lec’h brewed nearby in Morlaix (€6 to €6.40 for 330 ml). Doing dry January? Grab a few cans of Implosion (€3) or a P’tit Fausset organic apple juice (€4). // Tino Rôti
THE BULLET-PROOF BOTTLE: A magnum of Gropor, a fruity red blend that goes down easy, vinified in Provence at the Domaine de Sulauze (€32).
