THE STORY: First of all, don’t pay too much attention to the Basque name (which means “good home”), because Etxceaona is located 45 minutes outside of Paris, right near Giverny, practically in Normandy. In the small Yvelinois village of Blaru, Marie, who does a little of everything (interior design, furniture design, tapestry, cooking, etc.), decided to transform part of this former windmill into a bed & breakfast in 2011. With help from her architect daughter, Marie turned this place into the perfect spot for a cozy romantic getaway: the lounge area on the ground floor has antique furniture and there’s an immense bedroom upstairs with white tones and wooden rafters, a skylight, a couch, a soft bed and lots of pillows. Starting at €155 a night (minimum two nights).
TOILETRIES: And Other Stories soap, shampoo and shower gel.
INTERNET: Free (wifi).
BREAKFAST: Included (and served whenever you want it), with hot drinks, homemade bread, scones, brioche, granola and hams, local fromage blanc, fruit salad and freshly squeezed orange juice.
MINI-BAR: No, but there is a fridge equipped with milk, water and cider, along with a Nespresso machine and an electric teapot.
LITTLE LUXURY: Upon reservation, the owner, a fan of the chef Ottolenghi, will prepare an Italian-Mediterranean meal for you, and often invites guests to join her for big meals with family and friends.
