The new hotspot for ethically sourced sweet treats? Marguerite, obviously! Two years after opening his picture-perfect bakery of the same name, career-switching baker François-Xavier Lot made the savvy love of launching this feel-good eatery just across the street. With marble floors, veined wood and a brutalist counter crafted by Mono Archi, it’s a magnet for office works who flock come lunchtime and a welcome pit stop for tourists fresh from an art fix at the Le Voyage à Nantes festival. On our last visit (before their annual summer break), chef Marguerite Parent’s locally sourced plates were vanishing faster than you can say “sold out”: dainty mackerel gua baos slathered in lemony cream sauced and showered with puffed rice; a knockout tuna melt on country bread with herby tuna mayo and cucumber pickles from Jardins du Riez; a plush brioche bun loaded with tender roast beef, sauce gribiche and wilted herbs; and cheeky corn focaccia stuffed with shredded pork shoulder, melted cheddar, garlic cream and salsa verde. Naturally, the menu shifts with the seasons. And if savory hasn’t sealed the deal, the sweets will: the signature chocolate and roasted hazelnut babka is worth the trip alone, pretty brookies, Breton flan scented with organic vanilla, and a vibrantly virtuous fruit salad. · Megan Linar
