We’re all slavering for a taste of Matka (Polish for “mom”), the new hot spot in the Halles neighborhood! Piotr Korzen (ex-La Machine à Coudes) pays homage to the cuisine of his motherland, in this chicly Slavic datcha where Polish classics and fine dining join forces (a wood and marble bar, exposed rafters and modern chairs make up the decor). It’s not strictly orthodox by any means, but still deliciously Slavic in flavor. The day we went for lunch, we had all of the following: incredible mackerel gravlax pimped out with strawberry ketchup, dill, broad beans and toasted hazelnuts; before some lovely pierogi stuffed with an elegant potato purée, fresh cow’s milk cheese and caramelized onions, with a twist from some tangy sour cream. For dessert, there was mouthwatering chalwa with toasted sunflower halva and strawberry sorbet. Go east! // Jane in
FEELING THIRSTY? : In addition to the crème de la crème of Kavka vodkas (€8-14 a glass) and Brill palinkas (€15-18), there’s an impressive selection of Slavic wines, like an Austrian rotgipfler white by Stadlmann (€9 a glass), or a Polish pinot noir from the Adoria winery (€58 a bottle).
PRICE: : Set menus €24-29 (weekday lunch), €34 (weekend lunch), €69 (five courses at night and on the weekends), appetizers €12-16, mains €23-33, desserts €11-14.
