Craving Berlin-style doner kebab? Head over to this hipster joint with stripped-bare walls, bright neon lights, fat armchairs and old photos of Angela Merkel posing in German kebab shops! At Sürpriz, Benedikt Schilling and Stéphane Brass find inspiration in everything from K’ups Gemüsekebap to Prenzlauer Berg (where they learned the trade), all while whipping up some outstanding sandwiches. They get filled with marinated chicken from the same butcher as the legendary Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap (in Kreuzberg), delivered once a week from Germany, carefully-chosen vegetables (peppers, carrots, eggplant, etc.), the holy trinity of lettuce, tomato and onions, plus fresh herbs, a little feta and some freshly squeezed lemon juice! It all gets stuffed into custom-made bread, moistened by one of the three house sauces (yogurt, garlic, spicy) and served with crispy fries. Doner that sound great? // G.LeP.
FEELING THIRSTY? Sip on the best German drinks while listening to a cool electro soundtrack: Fritz-Kola (€2.50 for 330 ml), Club-Mate (€4) or even a good, simply named Bier beer (€3.50).
PRICE: Kebabs from €6.90 to €7.50, set menus €9.90 (with fries and a drink).
