Cécile (who used to work in the hospitality industry) and Marie (an ex-journalist) advocate for good, locally-sourced eats in the heart of the medieval city of Sauveterre-de-Béarn. As the owners, they made this into a place for sharing, decked out with original hardwood floors, vintage furniture and recipes illustrated on the walls. In the center of the shop, you’ll find fruit and vegetable crates from local producers; on the shelves, honeys, jams, spices, and grains sold in bulk or even natural wines and juices; in the fridges, artisan-made cheeses and ice creams! And there’s even a drugstore section (cosmetics, etc.) and workshops (wickerwork, pottery, sewing and “chitchat and tea,” etc.) available. // Ana Kirpad
The hidden gem: The Grand Roux Basque corn polenta from Arto Gorria (€3.70 for 500 g).
