Born in the USA, the smash burger is smashing to smithereens everything in its path as it makes its way across France. Including the so-called city of the popes now that Sébastien Clément and Charlotte Douchet (he works the griddle, she works front of house) set up their burger-obsessed eatery in Avignon. Seated in the almost entirely white space with a few street art touches, go ahead and devour their perfectly greasy Limousine beef patties that are caramelized around the edges and sandwiched between some extremely soft brioche buns: a classic burger packed with American cheese, ketchup, French mustard, onions and pickles; the double version, with the house’s secret sauce and iceberg lettuce to boot; along with a vegetarian version (red bean, red lentil and chickpea patty) or a spicy version (which includes chipotle peppers). All of which are paired with double-fried Agria potato fries, or some outstanding fried chicken with home-pickled jalapeños and cucumbers. And for the only dessert on the menu, there’s a homemade dark and white chocolate chip cookie, which also boasts our seal of approval! // Marcellin Caillou

FEELING THIRSTY? : In addition to Coca Cola and all the other usual soft drink suspects (€2.50 a can), there’s Bivouak artisan lemonade (€4 for a 330 ml bottle) and Rocca Nostra lager brewed nearby (same price).
PRICE: : Burgers €9-12, fried chicken €7, cookie €3, kids’ menu €10 (classic smash burger + small fries + drink).
