Now there’s a name with plenty of promise! The sultry Lord Byron, run by the equally sultry Luca De Griek, exudes the sweet scent of the good ol’ times. As you step inside this old estaminet tavern (an ornate bar counter, an antique chandelier hanging from the ceiling), a joyful hubbub of French and Flemish fills the air, both outside and in. So, what can you quench your thirst on? A five-year-old lambic from 3 Fonteinen (€3.50 for 250 ml), sour, no head and zero carbonation – but bursting with character! Or how about an oude gueuze from the De Troch brewery, another charismatic brew, or even a limited-edition kriek. Otherwise, enjoy a classic cocktail on the leather sofa, like the sharp Lord Basil, the house’s playful spin on a Gin Basil Smash. · Émile Marnac
