A teal storefront, a terrace with multicolored furniture: you’d really have to try hard to miss this shop located below the spectacular abbey church in La Chaise-Dieu. And it would be a real shame if you didn’t check it out, since Stéphanie Dubertret, the owner, is just as knowledgeable about wines as she is about books, with an inspired selection of works on nature, ecology, food and even the Auvergne department! What about the bottles of booze? There are local options at affordable prices, like the Tresaille 2022, a Val-de-Loire white from the Domaine des Bérioles (€14.50) or La Madone, a Côtes-du-Forez red from Gilles Bonnefoy (€13.50), along with beers from the nearby Brasserie de l’Alagnon (€3.40 for 330 ml, €6.40 for 750 ml). Take them to go in your tote, or pop open a bottle in situ (for an additional €5 corkage fee) if you want to chill on the terrace or near the gigantic wood-burning cantou fireplace. // Marcelle Claudepierre
THE BULLET-PROOF BOTTLE: Annolium, a Côtes-d’Auvergne white from the Domaine des Trouillères (€14).
