When siblings Besma and Redouane Allahoum opened Chëf in between two national lockdowns, they promised to serve “the best Berliner Kebap in Lyon.” Despite being a bit of a drive from Germany, the duo does indeed produce some very good homemade sandwiches! The night we went, in the somewhat chilly space (immaculate walls, a blue neon sign), we warmed ourselves up with the honeycomb-like pita bread stuffed full of grilled veal, pickled red cabbage, crisp lettuce, fresh feta, parsley and onions, all dressed in homemade white and Algerian sauces! FYI: they’ve got you covered if you’re vegetarian, with a seitan version that’s as messy as the “classic” version,” and for die-hard döner fans, there’s a Berlin version filled with grilled vegetables. Not to mention the hearty sides of homemade fries that are perfectly golden and crispy. Chëf, oui Chëf! // M.R.
FEELING THIRSTY? There’s homemade lemonade or ayran (a traditional fermented yogurt drink), unless you’d prefer a red and white can of the classic American soda… (€2.50 each).
PRICE: Set menu €12.50, kebab sandwiches €8.90, cookies €2.80.
