Best cave à manger Guide 2020

Saint-Ouen born and raised, Alcidia Vulbeau has done a costume change: the defrocked publisher has transformed into a cheeky chef! Accessing her superpowers via a super C.V. (Frenchie, Paris Popup), she’s set herself up in Saint-Ouen to shake out the fleas from the market and cook up the Bonne Aventure! The result? All the bigwigs from les puces soon snap up one of the yellow velvet chairs and a spot around the blue tile bar, making the most of the magical lunch option. The day we went, for €18: heroic grilled leeks in a soy-cider vinaigrette and sprinkled in toasted hazelnuts; dazzling soba noodles with dashi, duck breast, and grilled shiitakes spellbound with seaweed; before a chocolate lava cake with a heady vanilla-rum whipped cream. At night, the beers and wines, painstakingly chosen by her sidekick Mathias Tenret, bring some extra flair to the exhilarating tapas menu: kakuni pork in an herbed broth (€9); sensual octopus lounging over a bed of potatoes (€7); West Indian black sausage croquettes (€7); rice pudding with a genmaicha mousse (€6)… Perfect with the Chenin Noir Schiste from the Domaine du Prieuré (€4.50 a glass) or a Calypso beer from the Siren Craft Brew (€4.50 for 330 ml), unless you’d rather pay up the €7 corkage fee for a bottle of a white Bourgogne from the Domaine René Bouvier (€20) or a red Beaujolais-Villages, Du Beur Dans Les Pinards, from Karim Vionnet (€15). Menus from €15.50 to €18 (weekday lunch), à la carte €23-29 (weekend lunch). Tapas €6-12 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday night). // Matthieu Jauniau-Dallier
