What’s that? You’ve never bitten into a piece of meat that’s been smoked for 14 hours?! Quick, hurry to Hal 16! It’s here at this food court, inside an old warehouse along Ghent’s docks, that Arthur Messiaen satisfies meaty cravings at his stand called Røk, equipped with a Texas-style barbecue and an Argentinian grill. Feast on the following until you’re bursting at the seams: Menapii pork sausages straight outta the smokehouse; sliced leg of lamb from the Geetkotmolen farm in Lochristi, roasted low and slow; smoked beef brisket; a whole grilled John Dory, for two; and cool off between bites with some grilled pointy cabbage with radish and dill pickles, or Brussels sprouts with sour cream and fish roe. Special shout out to the beer garden tables on the terrace, so your feet can feast in the grass when the sun’s out. // Anita Kane
FEELING THIRSTY? No less than 30 craft beers on tap! Especially since Hal 16 is home to the Dok Brewing Company microbrewery (open to visitors), also run by Arthur. So, sip on a house brew (pils €3 to €3.50, Waar is Loca pale ale €4.50), unless you’d prefer one from brewer friends or a collaboration concoction, like the Soupe du Jour, a grisette beer from the Norwegian brewery Lervig and the Brasserie de la Senne in Brussels (€5.50).
PRICE: Plates €6-18.
