Madame La’s intuition was spot on when she decided to convert her clothing shop into an eatery to face the financial crisis… Because in the Olympiades neighborhood, already famous for its Vietnamese sandwiches and umami-rich sticky rice bowls, Bánh Mì 88 is far from playing second fiddle to anyone else! Once you’ve placed your order at the kitchen-bar, grab your beeper and wait patiently on the terrace on Avenue d’Ivry. And once it starts vibrating, that means it’s time to feast: a delicate xôi gà (sticky rice served with lemongrass chicken); bánh cuốn with ground pork, black mushrooms and Vietnamese mortadella, all of which is incredibly tender; a special bánh mì made on a baguette created in collaboration with a nearby baker, filled with incredible rolled pork belly and some excellent pickled carrots, amongst other good things… As for the desserts, there’s a comforting and delicious banana-tapioca combo. Hats off! // James Patisson
