Feel like doing a bit of horse whispering followed by indulging in a mouthwatering lunch? It’s all possible at the Anglet equestrian center, where the Cetaires, aka Cindy (ex-Coffee Muxu in Bayonne, in the kitchen) and Virginie (a painter, front of house), keep you well fed in a space with woven light fixtures and a terrace with lounge chairs. Opt for the Relais croque (a baker’s bun, baked ham from Montauzer, sheep’s milk cream, slow-roasted tomatoes), or the stunning banh mi dog, tested the day we went for lunch (an extremely soft and fluffy brioche bun from the Teulier baker, marinated pulled pork, red cabbage coleslaw, fried onions, sriracha mayo and pickled mustard seeds), or even the shakshouka (organic oeufs parfaits, tomatoes, onions, feta, spices). What about the sides? There’s a vegetable salad made with veggies from the Bayonne-based MOF vendor Jérôme Durquet, with seeds (poppy, sesame, sunflower), or smoked trout from the Basque country, with a lemon and dill yogurt sauce. Plus desserts like banana bread or some delicious homemade granola with Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and honey made by a cousin. And all day long, you can get homemade hummus, sardines from Getaria, cheese and charcuterie boards (serrano ham, Ardi Gasna). // Gérard Roubeix
